Following the Second World War, the population in the City of London plummeted. With a duty to provide housing for those working in the area—such as nurses, policemen and doctors—in 1951 the City Corporation ran an architectural competition for a new housing scheme on the northern edge of the City. The competition was won by Geoffry Powell in 1952 who invited Christoph Bon and Peter (Joe) Chamberlin to join him in developing a detailed design for the Golden Lane Estate, now Grade II and Grade II* listed.

This book captures the stories of the people on the estate with a series of with interviews with residents, photographed by Julian Ward. Fully illustrated with photography of the interiors and exteriors by Mary Gaudin, alongside archive images and essay by Elain Harwood.
