Following the Second World War, the population in the City of London plummeted. With a duty to provide housing for those working in the area—such as nurses, policemen and doctors—in 1951 the City Corporation ran an architectural competition for a new housing scheme on the northern edge of the City. Geoffry Powell won the competition in 1952 and invited Christoph Bon and Peter (Joe) Chamberlin to join him in developing a detailed design for the Golden Lane Estate, now Grade II and Grade II* listed.

This book captures the stories of the people on the estate with a series of interviews with residents, photographed by Julian Ward. Fully illustrated with photography of the interiors and exteriors by Mary Gaudin, alongside archive images and an essay by Elain Harwood.
