The route covers much of Bethnal Green, an area in the East End of London that suffered from extensive bomb damage and slum housing. The post-war drive for urban renewal saw its council commission the most avant-garde architects to solve the housing problem, including Denys Lasdun and Berthold Lubetkin. They produced some of the best examples of Modernist housing.

Donation to Shelter We are very grateful to everybody who has bought Perambulations over the years. It’s kept a roof above our heads so we’d like to give a little back by giving 25p from each guide sale to Shelter, the housing and homeless charity. Thank you.
